Grand Final soccer series takes to the radio airwaves

Posted on September 16, 2011

By VINNIE RODI

FOOTBALL Federation Victoria-Sunraysia will wrap up its 2011 season this Sunday, with the Harvey Norman Grand Final Series to take place at the Old Aerodrome Ovals.

CALLING THE SHOTS: Football Federation Victoria-Sunraysia’s Harvey Norman Grand Final Series will be broadcast live on local radio this Sunday, with Peter Greville, LEFT, and Ross Mosello to call all the action during the Senior Men’s final between Three Colours and Irymple Knights.

Coming off the semi-final stage of the series last weekend, which saw the top four teams across all age groups face off for a spot in their respective finals, this week’s Senior Men’s fixture will be a history-making event for the sport, with the game to be broadcast live on radio.

The final – which will see Three Colours come up against Irymple Knights – will be broadcast live on local radio station 106.7HotFM from 2.35pm – a first for the Harvey Norman Grand Final series.

A new initiative being embraced by both FFV-S and HotFM, the aim is to make the weekend’s action available to those unable to attend, while also promoting the sport on a large scale.

The broadcast will incorporate a wrap-up of the day’s proceedings, while also featuring interviews with players and coaches based on availability.

It’s a concept that could be seen on a regular basis next year, with the action on the weekend to be called by FFV-S regional administrator, Ross Mosello, an experienced referee and former player in his own right, and resident grounds-keeper, Peter Greville.

Peter’s appointment as commentator will certainly surprise many associated with the sport, with the likeable character better known for his volunteer efforts and contributions off-field.

Unknown to most in the sport, Peter is a veteran when it comes to the commentators caper, with more than 10 years experience calling Speedway action both in Mildura, and more recently in Renmark.

A career that started under the tutelage of Alan Collins – who spent years calling the action at Timmis Speedway – Peter, 49, said we was looking forward to the challenge of calling his first soccer game.

“It’s certainly going to be a first for me, and is something that I’m really looking forward to,” he said. “It was a bit of a shock to get the call from Ross asking to me to call the game, but I’m sure with Ross’ knowledge of the technical aspects of the game, and my experience, we’re going to make a strong team.”

Despite his vast experience, Peter said he still anticipated nerves prior to the call.

“The first 10 minutes before any call is always the most nerve-racking,” he said. “And I expect it will be the same on the weekend.

“I’ve actually spent the last couple of weeks brushing up on the rules, regulations and technical terms of the game, and hopefully I can do it justice.

“One of the tricks Alan taught me to help make calling as smooth as possible was to commit as much as you can to memory.

“With Ross as my right hand man I know we’ll get through it relatively unscathed, and hopefully people can tune in at home, or even come down and listen to the call on their car radios while watching the action in person.”

Apart from calling his first soccer match, Peter will also have the chance to commentate while his son Andrew takes to the field, with the younger Greville to line up with Irymple Knights.

“It’s certainly going to be a unique experience,” Peter said. “Andrew’s currently in his first full year in the seniors, and hopefully he can do well on the weekend.

“He’s actually been the one helping me memorise all of the terms and rules, and it’s going to be a fantastic experience calling his progress on the weekend.”

Ross said he anticipated a tight contest in the Senior Men’s final, with Knights and Three Colours having the measure of one another throughout the year.

“They’ve had some ripper contests this season,” he said. “And I expect this weekend to be no different.

“Both sides will be welcoming back a number of star players, and I’m really looking forward to the contest, and the opportunity to broadcast the game live on HotFM.”

The day’s action will kick off from 8.45am with the Under 12’s final between Mildura City and Three Colours, with the Under 14’s (Knights V Colours), Under 16’s (City V Knights), Reserve Men’s (Knights V Colours), and Senior Women’s finals (Knights V Mildura United) to follow.

Entry into the Old Aerodrome Ovals will be free for the day, with locals encouraged to attend and support their favourite teams, or simply get a taste of the sport.
