V8 Supercar race seat in sight for Waters

Posted on September 23, 2011

RAPID: Sunraysia’s Cameron Waters (centre) flanked by Trent Harrison (left) and Tom Williamson after his win at the sixth round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Phillip Island last weekend.

THE most promising young racing driver to come out of Sunraysia since the Kelly brothers has notched up yet another round win as the Australian Formula Ford Championship enters its penultimate round.

Cameron Waters was consistently quick at the sixth round of the series at Phillip Island last weekend, finishing on the podium in all three races, taking a third in the opening race followed by two second places.

The result extended the Sunraysia driver’s lead in the series from 58 points to 78 with just two rounds remaining – the Gold Coast on October 21 – 23 and Symmons Plains in Tasmania on November 11 through to November 13.

Waters needs to finish third or higher in each of the remaining races to clinch the championship.

If he wins the title he’ll be the youngest driver, at 17-years-old, to win an Australian Formula Ford Championship.

Waters has proven a revelation in the highly competitive Formula Ford series since joining last year, taking the 2010 Rookie of the Year award.

His performance last weekend was his third round win of the season.

This year has proven a busy one for the Sunraysia driver who has juggled his racing commitments and Year 12 studies with a role in the 7Mate reality television series Shannons Supercar Showdown.

The series started with 10 young racing drivers who’ve now been whittled down to just three, including Waters, following a series of challenges and competitions over the past two months.

The winning driver will race a V8 Supercar with show host, Grant Denyer, in the Shannons-Mars V8 Supercar entry at this year’s Bathurst 1000 race at Mount Panorama.

The next episode will air this Sunday afternoon. If he’s again successful, he’ll be in the final episode on Sunday, October 2.

Should he win the competition he’ll be the youngest driver ever to drive at Bathurst.
