IRYMPLE has capped off a remarkable 2011 Sunraysia Football League season in style, winning its sixth premiership in a tight and entertaining game against Robinvale.
Played in front of an enthusiastic and vocal crowd at Henshilwood Oval, Irymple managed to hold off a late Eagles charge to record a seven-point win, and ultimately secure its first premiership since 2006.
In a game that many were expecting would come down to the wire – with nothing separating either team throughout the season – Irymple and Robinvale put on a fantastic spectacle, with the game decided on the back of a 50 metre penalty to Swallows’ superstar Brad Eaton.
With Robinvale kicking with a four-goal breeze in the final term, and pushing the Irymple defence to its limits, the Eagles managed to reduce a 26-point three quarter time deficit to just one point with minutes to go.
With the ball locked in Robinvale’s attacking half for the better part of 10 minutes, Irymple finally managed to get a clearing kick away following a behind.
The ball was eventually carried to the Swallow’s forward 50 arc, where Eaton took a strong contested mark.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, champion on-baller John Jackson arrived a little late to the contest, with the umpire awarding a 50 metre penalty to Eaton for late contact.
It was a decision that effectively put the midfielder directly in front of goal, with the dead-eye kick gifting the Swallows a seven point lead.
What followed seconds later was the final siren, with Robinvale players visibly disappointed, and Irymple’s brigade invading the ground in celebration.
Irymple’s Nichols Coghlan finished with four goals, and Ryan Dowdy also proved a handful with three, while for Robinvale, Shannon Motlop’s five goals proved a highlight.
Irymple’s Donato DeAngelis and Aaron Baynes proved the best players on the ground, with DeAngelis dominating in defence, and Baynes providing a target across half-forward.
