MEMBERS of Mildura’s Ataru Taekwondo dojo have returned home from last weekend’s ITF Oceania Championships with 16 medals (11 gold, one silver and four bronze), with three locals also earning selection into the Australian squad to travel to next year’s World Championships.

San Williams, Andrew Knight, Emily Berryman, Demi Samaras and Darren Williams with their winnings from the 2011 Oceania Taekwondo Titles
Held in Adelaide, Demi Samaras – who Mildura Weekly readers will remember from our back page last week – was amongst the successful group, with the talented youngster bringing home five medals (three gold, one silver and one bronze).
Having already qualified for the ITF World Championships (which will be held in Ottawa, Canada, August 2012) in the Patterns section, Demi’s success will see her add the Longest Flying Side Kick and Highest Jumping Front Kick categories to her list of events.
Sibling combination San and Darren Williams also earned World Championship selection at the event, after winning four gold and two bronze medals between them.
Darren was responsible for bringing home the gold, finishing first in the Sparring, Highest Jumping Front Kick (special technique), Longest Flying Side Kick and Power Side Kick sections.
San finished third in both the Highest Jumping Front Kick (special technique) and Power Turning Kick categories, while also finding time to coach Demi through her events.
Also performing well at the Oceania Championships was Emily Berryman and Andrew Knight, who won four gold and one bronze between them.
Emily won three gold, proving the best in the Patterns, Highest Jumping Front Kick (special technique) and the Longest Flying Side Kick sections, with Andrew bringing home gold in Sparring, and a bronze in Patterns.
Demi, San and Darren will also set their sights on representing their country at next August’s World Titles.
