SUNRAYSIA’S Timmis Speedway complex will once again come alive to the sound of thousands of horsepower being unleashed as World Series Sprintcars return to the venue.
Mildura will host the third round of the series this weekend, featuring some of the quickest drivers and sprintcars in the world.
The series arrives at Mildura at an interesting point in the championship with un-contracted driver Ian Madsen at the top of the points table, 48 points ahead of reigning champion Robbie Farr after taking victory at the second round in Dubbo recently.
Farr proved last year a combination of consistency and raw pace is a formula for success and appears to be taking a similar route this season.
The reigning champion said he was looking forward to racing at Mildura again.
“I raced at Mildura a few years ago and really liked the track and the whole atmosphere of the town,” Farr said this week.
“This round is going to be really significant to the series as no-one has much, if any, information about the track with its new…surface.
“It’s a neutral playing field for all the contracted guys to try and work out.”
South Australian driver, Trevor Green, meanwhile sits just five points behind Farr in third going into the ahead of the Mildura round.
Behind the leading trio are some of biggest names in international speedway, including James McFadden, Max Dumnesny, Brooke Tatnell and American import Jason Johnson.
Dumnesny is in the midst of his 25th World Series Sprintcar campaign and sits fifth in the championship after posting top 10 finishes in the opening two rounds of the series.
The fan favourite will be looking to replicate his form and consistency this weekend.
Tatnell meanwhile struggled in the opening round of the championship, but appeared to have recovered at the second round before mechanical gremlins cost him a spot on the podium.
His team have built up a new car for Mildura in hopes of elevating themselves further up the championship standings this weekend.
This weekend’s World Series Sprintcars round in Mildura kicks off tonight with a ‘meet and greet’ event at the Edge Hotel Motel Timmis Speedway complex from 5pm. The pre-race event will feature drivers and cars as well as a barbecue and live music.
The first of the on-track action starts tomorrow night. Gates open from 4pm. Tickets are available for pre-purchase from Autopro in Line Avenue Mildura. Family tickets (two adults, four children) are $80, adults (16 years and over) $30, aged pensioners $25, students (12 – 15 years) $20. Kids (under 12 years) free.
