SEVERAL of Mildura’s WHK Junior Heat representative basketball teams have spent a successful weekend in Shepparton, taking part in the town’s annual tournament.

CHAMPIONS: Mildura’s successful Under 16 Division Two boys basketball team members celebrate their Shepparton win. The team is: Back row Peter O’Donnell (coach), Andrew Woods, Daniel Gervasoni, Jack O’Donnell, Ben Hall and Bruce Johnson (Team Manager). Front row: Jaivon Stacey, Liam Johnson, Nikki Matulic and Josh Grogan.
More than 180 teams from across Victoria took part in the event, including several teams from Melbourne.
Competing in age groups ranging from Under 12’s through to Under 18’s, both Mildura’s male and female competitors performed well, with several teams making it to the Grand Final of the tournament.
Proving at the top of their game during the event was the Under 16 Division Two boys team, which took out the title after a thrilling Grand Final against Mansfield.
With the final scoreline reading 42-35, our local boys had to pull out all the stops to walk away with the title – the only Mildura team to finish first at the tournament.
The success started with a thumping 53-13 win against Deniliquin, with further victories over Mansfield and Echuca.
Also doing well for Mildura at the event was the Under 12 Division One girls team, who managed to make it to their respective Grand Final.
Unfortunately they fell to a strong Melbourne Tigers team, who defeated Mildura’s youngsters 40-18.
The Under 14 Division One girls similarly made it to their Grand Final, and unfortunately proved no match for a strong Bendigo side, which won the game 28-13.
The Under 14 Division Two girls also played off in the Grand Final, with their match against Myrtleford proving a close affair.
The match went down to the wire, Mildura falling just six points short of a tournament trophy, with the final score 28-22.
Mildura’s Under 14 Division Two boys also proved good enough to make their Grand Final, with wins against Benalla, Echuca, Bendigo and Deniliquin leading to a tournament showdown – again against Bendigo.
In another tight contest, Bendigo redeemed their earlier loss to Mildura, winning 33-27.
The final local team to make it to their Grand Final was the Under 18 Division Two boys, who came up against a strong Swan Hill outfit.
Trying hard in a high-scoring match, the boys fell well short, with Swan Hill running away with a 56-37 win.
