SUNRAYSIA’S finest young swimmers have been put to the test this week, competing in the Cookes Sunraysia Two-Day Swimming Open.

SWIMMING SENSATIONS: Katelyn Gilbert, 18, works hard during the 50 metre breaststroke event, while LEFT, participants hit the water during the freestyle.
Held at Mildura’s Waves complex this past Tuesday and Wednesday, the tournament saw a large contingent of Victoria and South Australia’s best young swimmers compete, with achieving qualifying times for a number of upcoming State-based events the main goal for all involved.
Featuring swimmers in age groups ranging from eight and under up to Under 18’s, the tournament has been labelled a major success by organisers, with the warm weather and the onset of school holidays resulting in strong crowds.
All spectators were treated to exciting swimming action, with a number of Sunraysia-based swimmers producing standout results.
Included in this group for the boys was 15-year-old Layne Tankard – who proved a force in the freestyle and breaststroke events – and 17-year-old Anthony Gowers.
Rachel Tinker, 19, proved the best of the girls, winning a large number of events and posting strong times.
Sunraysia’s swimmers will now set their sights on the Berri Swimming Carnival, which will be held on Saturday, January 7.
