New track, new possibilities for Mildura’s BMX enthusiasts

Posted on January 20, 2012

By VINNIE RODI

SUNRAYSIA’S BMX riders will be chomping at the bit to get back on their bikes in the coming weeks, after plans were put in motion to treat the Mildura BMX Club’s track to a $6000 upgrade.

BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE: Mildura BMX Club publicity officer, Sandra Martin, overseas the track’s $6000 upgrade.

Thanks to grants from Mildura Rural City Council, and the support of numerous local businesses including GBM Consulting and many others, the upgrades will see the track elevated to world-class status, meaning a bright future for the small regional club.

Mildura BMX Club president, Ken Cornell, and club publicity officer, Sandra Martin, were both on hand this week to walk the Mildura Weekly through the works – which are being carried out by Protrak BMX owner/operator Nathan Evans.

“This is a project that has been on the club’s agenda for some time,” Ken said.

“The aim is to see the upgrades completed by the end of January, giving our members plenty of time to practice for the upcoming State titles.”

“Our riders will be able to train on a track that will better prepare them for upcoming events, helping to build fitness and race stamina.”

Once completed, the new track will encompass higher jumps, while also being close to 60 metres longer, and will provide locals with the opportunity to train on “world-class” facilities.

Protrak BMX owner/operator, Nathan Evans, said once completed, the track would be the rival of any BMX track in the world.

“That’s the goal,” he said. “The track was sub-standard at best prior to this makeover.

“Once completed, riders will be able to utilise a longer and wider track, which will also include world-class jumps.

“We’ve raised the height of some of the jumps by close to three metres, while the extension in length has brought the track up to a national and world standard.”

Sandra said another aim was to hopefully attract more interstate and national events to the region, while also encouraging top-class riders to visit.

“To attract some of the best riders in the world would be huge for our club, and would certainly generate increased interest in our sport,” she said.

“While we may be a small BMX club, we’ve managed to produce some great riders, with several former State, national, and even world riders making up our ranks.

“These upgrades are the next step in our club’s development, and it’s certainly leading to a bright and exciting future.”

Ken said that once complete, the club would be looking to host an official opening and a come and try day.

“Once we have a definite completion date, we will certainly be looking to open the track up to the public,” he said.
