A MILDURA man who has suffered from type two diabetes and high cholesterol for the better part of three decades believes he has found a way to relieve the symptoms associated with both conditions.
And it’s a remedy that might surprise you!
Fred Coulter, 80, said an on-going experiment with orange peel powder, one that started five years ago, has vastly improved his quality of life.
“My son (Michael Coulter) is actually a horse trainer, and he was buying orange peel powder from America to give to his horses, because it stops them from bleeding in the lungs and helps with muscle recovery,” Fred said.
“Being a diabetic, I suffer from all sorts of aches and pains, and it was getting to the point where I couldn’t sleep at night.
“After realising what this stuff could do for recovery in horses, I thought why not try it myself, and the results have been unbelievable.
“It has absolutely changed my life.”
Fred said that as a diabetic, he was often prone to muscle cramps due to the condition restricting blood flow.
“It took about three weeks before I saw any results, and for the past five years I haven’t suffered from any aches in the body at all,” he said. “The orange peel powder has improved my blood flow to the point where even my doctors can’t believe how good it is!”
Fred said he has been taking three heaped teaspoons of orange peel powder every day for the past five years, mixed with half a glass of orange juice.
He attributed the Vitamin C within the orange peel as being responsible for the increased blood flow, and the absence of discomfort he previously lived with for years.
“It helps open up all the small arteries,” Fred explained. “While I’ve maintained the diet that a type two diabetic should, this stuff has helped me go the extra mile, and I think more diabetics need to be aware of how it can help.
“It’s 100 percent natural, and I feel the best I have ever felt.”
Impressed with his father’s results, Fred’s son Michael has since begun producing the orange peel powder through his newly-created ‘Cejuvenate’ business.
According to Cejuvenate, orange peel powder can help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, prevent cramps and act as an anti-inflammatory due to the flavonoid hesperidin found in the peel.
The pectin within the peel can also decrease blood sugar levels, and reduce cholesterol levels.
The Baseline of Health Foundation states that historically, orange peels were highly valued and used for their essential oils in a variety of medicines and remedies.
They are still in regular consumption (mainly as a zest) as part of a Mediterranean diet, which is credited with numerous healthy benefits.
The peel contains as much as four times the fibre of the actual fruit, as well as more flavonoids.
“My blood pressure is now at the level you would expect in a teenager, and for 20-something years I was taking cholesterol tablets, which I no longer take,” Fred said.
Fred said that Cejuvenate currently had enough stock to cater for “high local demand,” and encouraged other diabetic sufferers in the region to give it a go.
“My daughter Anita Donlon recently posted my story online, and the response has been amazing,” he said. “I now know of a lot of people taking the powder, and they swear by it.”
