THERE could be few more spectacular settings for a B&B in Snowdonia National Park than that of Tyddyn Mawr farmhouse, nestling in lush fields beneath the Cader Idris Mountain.
The view was so lovely that after each day’s outing we looked forward to relaxing on our little patio as swallows darted and lambs gambolled to an unseen cuckoo’s evening song as we looked up upon Cader Idris, or the  “Chair of Idris”.
Cader Idris is an 11-kilometre-long ridge, named for the giant warrior poet of Welsh mythology, and is Wales’ second most popular mountain after Mount Snowdon.
We found this lovely place quite by chance, after arriving at the former market town of Dolgellau’s information centre late one afternoon. While there is a lot of accommodation in the area, not booking ahead is risky in popular Snowdonia because there are always hundreds of walkers trekking between B&Bs in the non-winter months.
But a couple of phone calls later, centre supervisor Ann had found us a room. We followed her directions out of Dolgellau’s cluster of grey mediaeval buildings (including an early Welsh parliament house) on to a narrow country road bordered by high stone walls.
