THE Wentworth Shire encompasses an area of more than 26,000 square kilometres. That’s a lot of ground in anyone’s estimation!
And while numbering the homes of people living in towns like Gol Gol, Buronga, Dareton and Wentworth is pretty straightforward, it becomes an altogether more difficult proposition once you get out into the irrigation areas like Coomealla or Pomona; or the wide expanses of the Western Division grazing country beyond. 
Wentworth Shire has been working on the challenge for several years, but now Council is quietly confident that by year’s end, every occupied rural residence in the Shire will have a unique address. This address will be denoted by a number based on an equation that, at first glance, seems a bit complicated, but ultimately makes a lot of sense, and cleverly allows for change in the future.
The Shire’s numbering system has been under development for several years, and is now in the final stages of preparation before the signs go up.
Fortunately, other Councils, like Loxton/Waikerie in South Australia’s Riverland, have completed the process, and they have been an invaluable source of help and guidance, according to Wentworth Shire Mayor, Cr Margaret Thomson.
