THE re-signing of Heat basketball grand final hero Kevin Smith for Season 2011 augers well for the Basketball in Schools program.
Big Kevin has been instrumental in encouraging hundreds of district school students to consider basketball as one of their sports of choice during his time in Sunraysia.
The Markwell’s Toyota-sponsored program is likely to be expanded next season and beyond now that Smith has committed himself to Mildura Heat for another year.
And that sits well with dealer principal Rod Markwell, who is impressed with the work that Kevin has done on and off the court, as an ambassador for the sponsor, his team and the sport in general.
Smith was on fire during last Saturday night’s Big V Division 3 grand final decider against Melton at Midura Basketball Stadium, scoring 41 of his team’s 104 points, pulling down 17 rebounds and chalking up at least six assists.
The game was neck and neck up to half-time, with a slender five-point lead to the local side, but after the break Mildura came out firing on all cylinders, baskets started to come from everywhere, and Heat ran away with the game, with the final score 104/77.
