THE Chaffey Titans have paid the ultimate tribute to their late captain Tupou ‘Po’ Taulanga by winning the SRL grand final.
The Titans, led by Man of the Match Dusty Lee, held on by the skin of their teeth to beat the Mildura Tigers 14 to 12 in the highly anticipated contest.
The creativity displayed by Lee, PICTURED RIGHT, at halfback, as well as an incredible try-saving tackle on Makuare Wuatai that will be remembered for years by all those who witnessed it, paved the way for Chaffey to become champions.
Following the final whistle, the Titans were quick to dedicate their win to a whole community, not just the playing group.
‘Po’ lost his life in a double-fatality on the Sturt Highway last month.
While the eventual premiers had all the early running, the Tigers, much like their predatory mascot, continued to prowl.
Mildura would not lie down, and their late attacking thrusts were helped by some poor Titans discipline while tackling.
Late in the piece the Tigers decided against the two-point goal attempt to tie, opting to go for glory with a try. They crossed over the line to score, but one of the passes was ruled forward, disallowing the score and allowing Titans to hold on.
Isikeli Taufa, Clifftony Tufui and Samiuela Napaa all crossed the line for the Titans, while SRL leading try scorer Justin Gowe and Tupunaviivii Kirirua-Gill scored maximums for the Tigers.
The SRL season award-winners were also announced, with Robinvale Storm’s Filipe Fietonu claiming the SRL best and fairest.
In the earlier women’s match, Warriors and Eelettes played out a 28-all draw, headlined by Warriors’ Seluvaia Taulani scoring a massive five tries.
