PEOPLE have been urged to limit the time they spend swimming or lounging by the pool − especially at sunrise and sunset − if lots of mosquitoes are about to avoid contracting Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus.
The call comes after Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services warned residents and visitors to north-west Victoria to protect themselves against the mosquito
-borne diseases.
“Ross River virus has been detected in mosquitoes in urban Mildura. These viruses can cause symptoms including joint pain and stiffness, headache, fever, rash and fatigue,” Dr Annaliese van Diemen, Deputy Chief Health Officer (Communicable Disease) states.
“Try to limit outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are about,” she says.
