The fourth annual ‘Fish The Fort’ competition at the Fort Courage Caravan Park in Wentworth was held recently, with hundreds of participants flocking to have a fish-off and help in donating funds to CHAILIS (Children Having an Illness Living In Sunraysia).

Fish The Fort was put on hold during 2020 due to COVID restrictions, but with people eager to enjoy in fishing, the competition was a perfect way to get back to it after restrictions eased.

The members of Fish The Fort organised sponsorships and fund-raisers through the event, which member Ross Nokes says meant a great deal to the organisers.
“We love fishing, but we also have a goal of helping local sick children through our competition,” he said.

“This year we teamed up with CHAILIS because they are the perfect match for this goal.
“We had to cap our entries at 200 people due to the room available and the catering at Fort Courage Caravan Park.
“We had a very successful sponsorship campaign overall with 49 businesses taking up a sponsorship package.”

The competition also included over $10,000 in prizes and an auction which was run by Steve Cooper of Elders Wentworth.

Additionally, Fish The Fort teamed up with Monaghan Truck and Trailer Sales and Trek Hardware for a raffle, the winning prize a Tandem Trailer valued at $5,000.
There was also live music from Paul Trevaskis, who had no problems entertaining the crowd.

When the day was finished, Fish The Fort members handed over a cheque for $20,000 to CHAILIS.

“What CHAILIS do means a lot to us as one of our founding member’s friends, Michael Pain, his daughter Piper has chronic epilepsy, which was what inspired us to start this fund raising event in 2017,” Ross said.

“We’d like to thank all our valued sponsors, participants and CHAILIS for their ongoing support in holding this competition each year.
“Last year CHAILIS handed out $40,000 to local families so, to raise half of that amount through our competition, is a great achievement.”
