IN the Sunraysia Women’s Football League, Gol Gol haven’t won a final.
But Gol Gol Football Netball Club president, Paul Mensch is confident that had the Millewa Football and Netball League continued this season that would have changed.
The girl’s Hawks team were awarded minor premiers when the season was cancelled last week, having only had the one loss.
Although the first week of finals were played, the Hawks girls didn’t play as ladder leaders, leaving positions two to five to battle it out to progress through the finals.
“It’s extremely disappointing for the girls,” Mensch said about having the season cut short.
“They have come together and taken a massive step forward this season.
“The girls only dropped one game all year, and that was when they were under strength and only had 14 players against 21.
“Even then they only lost by eight or nine points.”
Mensch said their success showed the development of the younger players − five or six of whom have come up through the junior ranks in recent years.
“It’s a testament to the ground work that has been put in, but also the maturity of some of our more established players,” Mensch added.
“Finishing minor premiers is something, but to actually play a final and win, which they still haven’t done, would have been the opportunity to take the next step.
“But they never got that opportunity and I do think these girls were going to go all the way.”
Mensch said the fact the teams were even able to play this season was to be celebrated, along with the fact the boys played finals after a couple of lean years.
“To make finals, to win the first final comfortably showed we were in the mix and there has been a lot of improvement,” Mensch said.
“The netballers were probably a bit more lean than we wanted but that is something we will focus on.
“But the fact we were able to get on the park, to come together as teams, is a positive we really need to take out of it all.”
