Stars on Ice in the Langtree Mall kicked-off last weekend, an ice skating initiative by Mildura City Heart aimed at getting the community together for fun and excitement over the school holidays.

The ice skating rink opened on June 26 and will stay open until July 11, with hundreds of adults and kids streaming to the mall to have a skate.

Mildura City Heart manager, Danielle Hobbs says the activity was a long-term project and was kept under wraps for over five months.

“We’ve been working on it for just over five months and we kept it under wraps for a very long time, mainly because the last 18 months have been tough for anything that requires event management and of course with the recent lockdown we didn’t know if it would be going ahead,” she said.

“When we knew restrictions were being lifted and it would be able to go ahead we were really happy.

“We wanted something with a ‘wow’ factor which everyone could enjoy in the CBD over the school holidays and it’s so nice to have it actually eventuate.”

There will be themed sessions throughout the holidays at the rink, such as Disney themes like Frozen, dress-ups, date nights on Thursdays and disco nights on Fridays.

There will also be prizes available for both kids and adults.

“It’s all really fun, we’ve got a disco ball and disco music for Fridays and there are all sorts of prizes available for those who come along,” Ms Hobbs said.

“Also, if people come skating in their ‘onesie’ they can have a go at the lucky dip as well.”

The community has come out in droves to take part in the sessions.

Ms Hobbs said it was no coincidence for a community that has been “handcuffed by COVID” for more than a year.

“Our focus was really on giving something to the community,” she said.

“We’re really conscious of how our choices for activities have been minimised because of COVID.

“It’s really taken off so far and has been very busy every day. As word gets out we’re hopeful we’ll see even more people coming down and enjoying themselves.”

Sessions run daily from 10am, with Thursday night and Friday night sessions also running.
