MEDITERRANEAN Shipping Company (MSC), arguably the largest privately-owned Italian shipping company in the world, has established a permanent home in Mildura.

The group, which has been servicing clients in Sunraysia and South Australia’s  Riverland for the past 30 years, officially opened its 92 Lime Avenue, Mildura, branch on Wednesday night.

A crowd of more than 60 stakeholders, clients and public figures attended, with Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence invited to officially open the office.

The opening of the Mildura office has created two full-time positions, with local resident Pat Zappia to take on the role of office manager, while an administration position had also been created.

MSC regional country manager, David Argiro, meanwhile, will oversee operations from Adelaide, while also making regular visits to the region.

Mr Argiro said that the catalyst to open an office in Mildura had been growing demand.

“We’ve always participated in the local exports from here – grapes, citrus, wine, almonds, all different types of commodities – while also being a large supporter of Citrus Australia,” he said.

“We have offices in every major city across the country… with our head office for Australia and New Zealand located in Fremantle.

“Part of the decision to open an office here was based on the volume coming out of this region, which is also a very large growth region.

“This office will look after all of the Riverland, Sunraysia and Riverina regions – all the way from Renmark to Griffith.

“It’s a large and fast growing industry up here, and rather than having people having to travel interstate to service clients and customers, we want to expand that and have a local presence so that local people and customers can come in and see us.”

The MSC Group was launched in 1970, with Gianluigi Aponte, the current MSC Group executive chairman, establishing the business as a single-vessel operation.

The group recently celebrated a 30-year presence in Australia, and since its inception has grown into a world leader in global container shipping – boasting an international clientele in the millions, and a workforce of more than 47,000 worldwide across 480 offices!

The group is also the parent company for organisations operating in transport and logistics (truck, rail and sea), while also having a presence in the passenger/cruise ship industry.

Mr Argiro said that the MSC Group had big plans for its Mildura operation.

“MSC is forever changing, and being a private company we can act and do things a little bit differently,” he said. “Our goal is to expand and grow this office into something bigger.

“We also want to extend that existing business range and portfolio and build on that, and then, in turn, that will enable us to create more jobs and be more prominent in the region.”
