Irymple Cricket Club took out the SCA first division 20/20 final recently, defeating Workers Gol Gol by six wickets in an entertaining affair.

The hosts had a strong 6/108 total to chase after Shacaya Thomas (52) and Wade Hancock (24) put together strong performances at the crease for Gol Gol.

After taking 2/17 in the visitors’ innings, Dan Coghlan managed to make significant inroads for his side with the bat.

The co-captain played an impressive innings, making 43 runs and combining with Mark Thomson (18) and Wade Minter (15) to reach a winning 4/109 total in just over 18 overs, and winning man of the match for his efforts.

Co-captain Mark Thomson was thrilled with the win.

“It’s a great feeling. Obviously we won the final last year so to back it up with another strong performance this year is a good feeling and a good confidence booster for the rest of the season,” he said.

“The one-day or 20/20 game suits our style. We’ve got a really good set of bowlers and aggressive batsmen.”

Thomson was also full of praise for his fellow captain, and the rest of the batting order.

“We had a bit of a chase so when Dan settled in and started making runs it settled some nerves and we could build off that. The rest of the batting order was then able to perform well and get a good score on the board,” he said.

“Dan just keeps doing what he does, making runs quickly at the top of the order and taking wickets at a low expense.”

The side is now looking towards making the 40-over finals that are fast approaching and reaching the ultimate success come season’s end, a feat Mark believes they can achieve.

“We want to continue building on some pretty good form and then obviously aim for the ultimate at the end of the season,” he said.

“We’ve got the team, we just need to make finals first and then play it from there.”

Irymple will play away against Workers Gol Gol tomorrow.
