IT’S been a very long road to showtime, but Musical Society Mildura Inc are hopeful that the newly rescheduled dates for their Mamma Mia performance will stick.
Director Steve Prescott said despite many performance cancellations due to COVID-19, the cast and crew are ready to take to the stage in February 2022.
“It was disappointing to have to postpone – especially when the original performance was meant to happen in mid-September and the cast had already worked so long on bringing the show to life,” he said.
“After two and a half months off, the crew have really missed it – it’s not just the rehearsing, but the entire social aspect of it all.
“The lockdowns really hit hard with some of our cast and coming back into rehearsals has made a massive difference to them in particular.
“The cast are just so excited to be back together, doing what they love and they’re all so ready to get the show on the road – rehearsals are in full swing, and everyone is really excited.
“There’s a great energy and buzz around it all and you can really see the cast coming together again to bring the audience the best show they’ll have seen in two years.
“The Mildura Arts Centre (MAC) is a fantastic venue with a great stage and we can’t wait to get out there.”
With a 45 person cast and just as many behind the scenes bringing it all together with a massive two-story set, Mr Prescott said Mamma Mia’s “old school love story” will be “brought to life” for audiences.
“It’s a story centred around – a bride-to-be trying to find her real father, whilst finding herself, but also a story on rekindling lost love, and it’s a story our cast are so ready to tell,” he said.
In one of the most recognised musicals ever to hit the West End and Broadway, Mamma Mia is based on the songs of Swedish pop/dance group ABBA.
Active from 1972 to 1982 and one of the most popular international pop groups of all time, ABBA topped the charts in Europe, North and South America and Australia.
Following the premiere of the musical in London in 1999, ABBA Gold topped the charts in the United Kingdom again.
Performances will run from February 3 to 6, with five shows in total, including two matinees and three evening performances.
Tickets can be purchased through the MAC website.
