Mildura councillors last night elected Cr Jason Modica the city’s new mayor.

A former deputy mayor who stood as an independent candidate for Mallee in the 2019 federal election, Cr Modica was re-elected to council last month.

The local tradesman, owner of Jason Modica Tiling, was nominated to be Mildura’s No 1 citizens for the next 12 months  by former mayor Cr Mark Eckel.

In the vote, Cr Modica received seven votes while eight-time mayor Cr Glenn Milne who topped the council election and was nominated for mayor by newly-elected Cr Ian Arney received two.

New councillors Cyndi Power and Jodi Reynolds nominated Cr Helen Healy as deputy mayor. Cr Milne was also nominated for the No 2 position by Cr Arney with the final vote 6-3.

Cr Modica will chair his first council meeting as mayor next Wednesday.

Due to COVID-19, council meetings continue to be closed to the public but are live streamed on council’s website.
