With the commencement of Millewa football comes the start of the league’s netball season and players are keen to get back on court.

Reigning A Grade premiers Werrimull will eventually have a team reasonably different from that of two seasons ago, but returning coach Alison Walker is confident her team will hold their own.

“We’ve been lucky enough to have really good numbers to our tryouts this year,” Walker said.

“Unfortunately, we had to turn a few players away because there is only three grades of senior netball for the season.”

The league have dropped their A Reserve grade due to too many clubs struggling to fill the fourth senior side.

The new format is A, B and C Grades, along with an 18 and Under competition, which is new to the league, and a 15 and Under division.

Walker said the A Grade team will be bolstered by some “very capable” 2019 A Reserve players along with some new recruits to choose from. Four premiership players remain in the team from 2019.

“Our A Grade side won’t be set until we’ve played the first few rounds,” Walker said.

“I like to keep it as a squad to ensure we get the right combination in the teams before we lock anything in.
“It’s not necessarily about who is the best but who works well together on the court.”

The Magpies outfit got some preseason practice with a game against Imperials and another against Red Cliffs in the Sunraysia Football Netball League preseason competition.

“It was a lot of fun and got us really excited for the season,” Walker said.

“It will be a different line up to previous years so it might take some time to find our momentum but I’m confident we will have a competitive side.”

As for which team will take it to the reigning premiers this season, Walker said although news has been relatively slow, Nangiloc keep getting stronger and stonger.

“We generally have a good game against all sides so hopefully it’s an even competition to keep everyone on their toes,” she added.

Tonight Gol Gol and Meringur will go head to head in the opening games of the season while tomorrow will see Bambill and Nangiloc in action and Cardross reunite their rivalry with Werrimull.
