THE BLUEPRINT for the $5.5 million Mildura Riverfront Stage Two development is on the table with the scope and timing of works for the project indicating that it will commence in middle of next year with completion due mid 2022.

Councillor for Economic Development and Tourism Mark Eckel said the eagerly awaited project is going to be even more important to Mildura now.

“I believe this is a necessary progression of Stage One of the Riverfront, which without doubt, is the most significant achievement by this and previous councils,” he said.

“The most popular discussion among daily patrons on the riverfront are the expectations for the ‘Village Square’. This whole development should be a matter of state and national significance.”

Cr Eckel said the Victorian Planning Authority are also excited with the prospects that the project offers.

“Coming out of COVID, I can’t think of anything more exciting than this project,” Cr Eckel said.

“With further community consultation coming up and main works anticipated to commence mid 2021, these are very exciting times for tourism and much needed employment opportunities.”

The development of the Village Square precinct, including the Powerhouse, will create an iconic tourist destination and community asset.

The project will deliver structural repairs, refurbishment and upgrade of the Powerhouse building to become a multi-use, flexible and expressive arts, cultural, tourism, and community space.

In addition, a café/food and beverages structure, visitor information kiosk, a functioning village square area including, outdoor decks, covered areas, pedestrian connections to existing riverfront sites, footings, ramp, stage area, paving, grassed irrigated area and signage will all form part of the development.

Additional car parking and amenities buildings that service the village square precinct will be created, together with community and retail spaces within the precinct.
